Helical gears mesh much more gradually, reducing the amount of vibration experienced by each tooth and significantly reducing the noise generated. This is due to vibration that is created as the teeth engage and disengage quickly. As most racing fans know, spur gears produce significantly more noise than helical gears. Instead of straight-cut (or “spur”) gears, however, we’ve developed the first force-feedback transmission for racing wheels featuring diagonal-cut (“helical”) gears. As with the G25, the G27 features a dual-motor, single-reduction force feedback transmission supported by two sets of steel ball bearings. The most significant improvement is the introduction of a helical gear system to the force feedback transmission. In designing it, our primary goal was to improve upon the already-great G25, focusing particularly on the number of buttons on the wheel, the feeling of the shifter module, and the sound and feel of the force feedback transmission. Though I’ve been seeing unofficial reports about a Logitech G27 Racing Wheel floating around the Internet since January, I’m now able to officially confirm the existence of this new racing wheel for PC and PS3. Never again will I have to resort to driving a Ferrari with a keyboard.Today marks the announcement of the new Logitech G27 Racing Wheel, which will be replacing the venerable G25 Racing Wheel.

Honestly, that keyboard and I had taken down 100,000 Nazi soldiers! Surely, I could get by without another controller… After all, it would probably end up like those jokes about unused home gym equipment.

Each time, I would imagine what it would be like having a real steering wheel. So, how do I end up buying a full racing peripheral set like the Logitech G27? That’s easy: Driving with a keyboard sucks! Every time I would play a PC racing game, I would immediately get frustrated driving around with arrow keys. Nice place to vacation, but I wouldn’t want to live there. This is where I separate myself from the hardcore racing fans. I might tweak the burst of my nitrous, but I don’t even know what changing my camber angle does. I would much rather dodge traffic in my Z06 Corvette than negotiate a hairpin at Le Mans. It wouldn’t be my place to speak about the simulation community, but becoming a true purist was just not my cup of tea.

I put my hours into Train Simulator, Flight Simulator, rFactor, Mech Warrior, and even Jane’s AH-64D Longbow. During all that playing, I never understood the obsess… ahem, the passion… of the simulation genre. However, I was an equal opportunity gamer. Buying, tuning, and racing real cars was an awesome experience. My interest in racing games officially started with the release of Gran Turismo on the Playstation.
